C O U N T Y is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Petra Cortright, titled “kinder surprise” sharky baba. Petra Cortright is an internationally-exhibited artist who lives and works in LA. She studied at Parsons School of Design in New York and the California College of the Arts. Cortright’s works have been featured in the Venice Biennale and New Museum (New York). Her work is also included in the permanent collections of prestigious institutions such as the Hammer Museum and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). She has been reviewed in the LA Times, New York Times, The New Yorker, W Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, and ArtForum among others. The art critic (and editor of ‘Elephant’ magazine) Charlotte Jansen has called Petra Cortright “the Monet of the 21st Century.”

“kinder surprise” sharky baba represents a new body of work for Cortright. With strong blocks of color and fresh graphic textures, the works retain their digital nature while further pressing the boundaries of painting. Cortright creates her paintings in Photoshop, working with an arsenal of brushes and collected images and colors culled from surfing the web. Hundreds of layers build up in one “mother-file,” which Cortright then manipulates into a variety of permutations for printing onto substrates ranging from Belgian linen to anodized aluminum to paper or acrylic. The layers of brushstrokes are then printed in a highly specific order with the aid of a master printer. Keeping with her modus operandi, the title for the show is pulled from Cortright’s extensive collection of spam text, as are the titles of each painting.
